Orientation workshop for the newly appointed Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC)

On 26-27 February 2008 Mr Denis Kadima and Ms Ilona Tip from EISA were joined by Mr TGGG Seeletso, the Director of Elections, Botswana at an orientation workshop held in Zanzibar with the ZEC, which is led by Chairperson the Honourable Khatib MK Mwinyichande.

The programme included discussion on

  • electoral systems
  • Zanzibar's electoral legislation (led by the Honourable Chief Justice and former Deputy Chair of ZEC, Justice A Ramadhani)
  • functions and duties of commissioners
  • the electoral time table and
  • managing stakeholder relations.

A lively, constructive and interactive discussion took place which included challenges specific to Zanzibar as well as the regional perspective.
