Sudanese study mission

Gauteng, South Africa
16 - 17 April 2009

EISA and the South African Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) are supporting the South African Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in hosting a study mission for 25 representatives of the Sudanese National Electoral Commission and the government of South Sudan to familiarise them with electoral processes and the details of managing an election. EISA and the South African IEC are providing technical information and expertise. EISA will conduct a two day induction programme for the delegation from 16 - 17 April 2009.

The specific purposes of the training are to

  • familiarise the Sudanese Electoral Commission and South Sudan government with the electoral cycle approach as it yields longer term results and provides a better opportunity to address key issues such as ongoing capacity development, institutional strengthening and sustainability;
  • equip the Commission and government with basic skills for approaching about elections as an ongoing or cyclical activity and integrate electoral assistance with other broader democratic governance issues;
  • provide insight into the functions of the South African electoral system, the South African Parliament and the South African IEC;
  • share experiences with South African electoral officials; and
  • draw on lessons learned from the South African experience to formulate projects in order to plan and administer democratic elections in Sudan.
