Promoting Intra-Party Democracy in Lesotho workshop

EISA will hold two back to back workshops for political parties in the Butha-Buthe and Mokhotlong Districts in Lesotho from 10th to 15th November 2008. The 2 workshops will be conducted under the Promoting Intra Party Democracy in Lesotho project jointly implemented with the Lesotho Council of Non Governmental Organisations (LCN) and funded by Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA). The workshops form part of a series of district based capacity building programme which derives from expressed need by parties during earlier initiatives ranging from research and dialogue carried out by EISA in Lesotho.

The overall goal of the workshop is to contribute to the capacity building of parties. The specific objectives are to:

• Provide participants with an understanding of the nature and character of political parties
• Provide participants with effective leadership skills
• Assist parties grapple with leadership selection, candidate nominations and primary elections
• Introduce participants to public outreach strategies
• Give participants an insight of political party coalitions
• Empower participants with conflict management skills
• Nineteen registered political parties including the ruling and opposition parties are expected to attend the workshops.
