Post Election Review Workshop

EISA, in partnership with the Institute for Policy Interaction (IPI), is hosting a 2009 post election review workshop guided by the theme Performance of Political Parties in the 2009 elections: Examining the weakening of party systems in Malawi. The principal goals of the workshop are to reflect on the 2009 presidential and parliamentary elections in Malawi and critically assess the implications for institutionalisation of the party system since parties play a key role in the democratisation process. The objectives of the workshop are to:
- promote intra-party democracy;
- encourage parties to develop their structures for effective execution of their democratic mandate;
- exhort parties to apply democratic principles in dealing with leadership and nomination issues;
- assist parties develop effective outreach programmes with a view to redress loss of public trust; and
- encourage parties to embrace gender equality within their structures.
The workshop will be attended by senior politicians, academics, the Malawi Electoral Commission, members of civil society organisations and experts from the SADC region.
