Roundtable discussion: Democracy and human rights in education
Southern African countries as signatories to various International Declarations and Conventions have committed themselves to education for Human Rights, Democracy and Peace. This commitment is motivated by the needs of our countries and the region as a whole where we face the challenges of putting in place democratic practices, effective ways of managing conflict, building peace and developing a culture of human rights.
Join us and a panel of experts from Zambia as we reflect on these challenges. A group of panellists will share their insights into the needs of civil society in this regard and how they can be addressed through education:
- We will hear from a visiting educationalist from the region about how these issues are imperative to achieving the goal of equal education for all,
- A representative from the Ministry of Education will give insight into how the Ministry has approached these issues through curriculum and educator programmes,
- Leaders from civil society based organisations who have set up or hope to set up interventions will share their experiences.
The programme will be interactive and we will take time to share experiences, ideas, challenges and concerns as a group. It is hoped that by the end of the programme participants and panellists will have a deeper understanding of the challenges facing Human Rights and Democracy Education programmes and educators in Zambia and that some strategies will emerge from these deliberations for future collaboration and interventions.
