Literature Review
Grant Masterson
The purpose of including a literature review in this toolkit is two-fold:
- It allows the reader to gain a better understanding about the extensive literature which is now available on the APRM.
- It provides the reader with a general sense about the major debates which are relevant to NEPAD and the APRM.
For purposes of clarity, this literature review divides the available material into different categories, and tries to position the available papers, reports and other articles within these categories. The opinions expressed in the reviewed papers are not necessarily the views of the author, nor are they necessarily the views of EISA, but are expressed as part of the broader debates which have emerged with the formation of the APRM. The majority of the literature in this review is freely available on the internet, and where possible, links to the source pages have been provided. Taking into consideration the rapidly expanding body of knowledge on the APRM, this literature review should not be treated as the definitive source on all APRM materials, but rather as a guide to some of the significant publications that address the APRM.
For the purposes of this review the following distinct debates are distinguished:
- A broad discussion of the importance of good governance in African Development
- Broad description, analysis and critique of NEPAD and the APRM within NEPAD, as well as the relationship between NEPAD and the AU/PAP etc.
- Analysis and critique of the APRM design and purpose
- A discussion of the role of civil society in NEPAD and the APRM
