The African Peer Review Mechanism
The APRM comprises a number of African Union (AU) member states who have voluntarily acceded to the APRM with the common objective of improving the governance practices and standards in their respective countries. It is described in the APRM Base document as a self-monitoring mechanism, whereby a country will undergo an assessment of the state of its national governance standards and practices and then draw on the common experiences of its peers in improving upon those standards and practices.
The objectives and scope of its mandate sets the APRM apart as one of the most ambitious governance exercises ever undertaken on the African continent, and certainly the most important new African initiative of the 21st century to date.
