Born 13 March 1985, Dr Stals furthered his studies at the Extramural Division of the University of Pretoria where he obtained, in succession, a Bachelor, Masters and a Doctorate in Commerce in 1968.
Dr Stals joined the South African Reserve Bank in May 1955. He was consistently promoted within the Reserve Bank, until in August 1989 he was appointed Governor of the South African Reserve Bank. He served in this capacity for 10 years until his retirement from the Reserve Bank in 1999.
Dr Stals is the recipient of numerous awards and honorary degrees, and he has served as a Member of the Economic Society of South Africa; the Institute of Bankers of South Africa and as a Honorary Professor of Economics at the University of Pretoria and the Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg) in South Africa.
Dr Stals also served as Governor of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, at various times from September 1985 until August 1999. He is currently the Chancellor of the University of Pretoria and Director of the Standard Bank Group Limited.
