Dr Graça Machel
Dr Graça Simbine Machel is from Mozambique and represents Southern Africa on the APR Panel.
Dr Machel was born in Incadine, Gaza Province in Mozambique. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in German Philology from the University of Lisbon, Portugal.
Dr Machel has served as: Secretary of State for Education and Culture in the Transitional Government of Mozambique (1974 - 1975); Minister of Education and Culture of Mozambique (1975 - 1983); and Minister of Education (1984 - 1989). She subsequently served as as Special Representative of the Secretary -General of the United Nations on the "Study of the Impact of Armed Conflict on Children" (1994 - 1996) and as a Member of the Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters: United Nations (2000).
Dr Machel is the recipient of various awards and honorary degrees and serves as a Member of Boards of various institutions including the United Nations Foundation, the South Centre, United Nations University.
Dr Graca Machel presently serves as the President of the Foundation for Community Development of Mozambique and the Chancellor of the University of Cape Town in South Africa.
