Zimbabwe: Referendum 2000: Results
Updated June 2007
A national referendum was held on 12 and 13 February 2000 on the adoption of a new constitution for Zimbabwe. The proposed constitution would have, amongst other things, strengthened the power of the presidency to confiscate white-owned land without compensation (EISA 2000 7-8).
President Robert Mugabe proposed the new constitution and his party, Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU PF), campaigned for an endorsing "yes" vote. The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led the campaign of the opposition parties for a "no" vote (EISA 2000 7-8).
The new constitution was rejected by 54.31% to 45.69% of the votes; voter turnout was about 26% (EISA 2000 8-9).
See VENTER, D 2005, Zimbabwe before and after the June 2000 elections: an assessment, for a discussion of the implications of this poll.
