Accession protocols and conventions

Certain protocols are compulsory for membership of many international bodies:

  • The Southern African Development Community Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, which include commitments to ensuring the full participation of citizens in the political process.
  • The African Union Constitutive Act (Art 3 e, h. - The promotion and protection of human rights as the objective of the African Union) as well as the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.
  • The United Nations and the aim of protecting human rights set out in the Preamble of the Charter (in 1980) as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948.

Optional protocols and conventions

Zimbabwe has ratified or acceded to the following UN General Assembly protocols:

  • The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
  • The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (on 13 May 1991).
  • The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
  • The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (in 1991).
  • The Convention on the Rights of the Child (in 1990).
