Zimbabwe: 2008 Presidential election results - second round

The Electoral Act (Chapter 2:13 as amended, 110) required that, since no candidate won an absolute majority in the 29 March election (see 2008 Presidential election results - first round), a run-off be held between the two candidates that obtained the most votes, in this case Morgan Tsvangirai and Robert Mugabe.

However, on 22 June 2008 Morgan Tsvangirai (2008) declared that he was withdrawing from the election because he believed that a free and fair election was not possible in the climate of state sponsored violence that prevailed in the run-up to the election (see 2008 Post-harmonised election violence). On 25 June the ZEC said that the withdrawal had been filed out of time and that the run-off would still take place (Veritas 2008a).

The presidential second round was held on the 27 June 2008 (for more information see Presidential run-off). The results were announced by the chief electoral officer on 29 June 2008 (Veritas 2008b).
