The nomination of candidates for president of Zanzibar or House of Representatives seats in the national assembly is governed by the Election Act of 1984 (revised 2004), which stipulates that a presidential candidate must be nominated by a registered political party to the ZEC with a minimum of 200 nominations, and for House of Representative seats, a minimum of 25 nominations. The political party must satisfy all the requirements of political party registration (namely, the party must have a presence on the mainland as well as in Zanzibar). For presidential candidates, a nominee is required to pay a deposit of TSh 1,000,000 (US$ 1,900), and for House of Representatives candidates, a deposit of TSh 50,000 (US$ 100. ZEC 1996, 24-27).
