Zanzibar: 2010 House of Representatives election results

The election of the Zanzibari House of Representatives (together with election of the Zanzibari President) took place on 31 October 2010.

Seat allocation

For the constitutional arrangements underlying the seat distribution in the House of Representatives see Zanzibar: Constitution. Seats in the House of Representatives were allocated in the following way:

  • 50 members were elected from single member constituencies in first-past-the-post elections.
  • Seats were allocated for the representation of women to ensure that they made up at least 15% of the total number, which were distributed amongst the parties in proportion to the seats they won in constituency elections.
  • 10 members were nominated by the President (two in consultation with the opposition).
  • The five regional commissioners and the Attorney General were ex officio members.
