Zanzibar: 2000 Presidential election results
Updated June 2007
Voting in 34 constituencies in Zanzibar took place on 29 October 2000. However, in 16 constituencies on Unguja (in the Urban West Region) inefficient distribution of electoral materials forced the Electoral Commission hold fresh elections on 5 November 2000. The Civic United Front (CUF) boycotted the rerun (Zanzibar Electoral Commission 2000, 15-18). According to the National Electoral Commission of the UNited Republic of Tanzania (2001, 67) the CUF had demanded, with the support of some other parties, that all the results in Zanzibar be nullified and the whole election be rerun; when this demand was not met the boycott was initiated.
