Zanzibar: 2000 House of Representatives election results
Updated June 2007
Voting in 34 constituencies in Zanzibar took place on 29 October 2000. However, in 16 constituencies on Unguja (in the Urban West Region) inefficient distribution of electoral materials forced the Electoral Commission hold fresh elections on 5 November 2000. The Civic United Front boycotted the rerun (Zanzibar Electoral Commission 2000, 15-18).
The number of registered voters was 446 482 (Zanzibar Electoral Commission 2000, 8).
Seat allocation
For the constitutional arrangements underlying the seat distribution in the House of Representatives see Zanzibar: Constitution. Seats in the House of Representatives were allocated in the following way:
- 50 members were elected from single member constituencies in first-past-the-post elections.
- Seats were allocated for the representation of women to ensure that they made up at least 15% of the total number, which were distributed amongst the parties in proportion to the seats they won in constituency elections.
- 10 members were nominated by the President (two in consultation with the opposition).
- The five regional commissioners and the Attorney General were ex officio members.
