Tanzania: The Presidency of Kikwete (2006-2010)

Updated January 2011

The situation inherited by President Jakaya Kikwete from his predecessor President Benjamin Mkapa was a favourable one. Politically, Tanzania had introduced a multi-party democratic constitution that had become well established through three democratic Presidential and National Assembly elections in 1996, 2000 and 2005, the mandate obtained for his presidency of 80% of the vote was an overwhelming one. Economically the country had mader great strides. Economic growth had increased steadily from 1.8% on average between 1991 and 1995 to 5.3% between 1996 and 2000 and then to 7.7% between 2001 and 2005 (EAC 2009).
