Tanzania: 2005 Presidential election results

The United Republic of Tanzania elections for parliament and the presidency were held on December 14, 2005. They were postponed from October 31, 2005 due to the death of Chama Cha Demokiasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) vice-presidential candidate, Jumbe Rajab Jumbe (National Electoral Commission 2006, 51, 61, 65).

Women's participation
The sole woman running for the presidency was Anna Claudia Senkoro, leader of the PPT-Maendeleo, who finished eighth out of 10 candidates with 0.17% of the votes; three other candidates chose women as vice presidential running mates (see 2005 Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates by party and gender for details). The winning candidate, Jakaya Kikwete, and running mate, Ali Mohammed Shein, were both men.
Results
If a presidential candidate is from the Mainland the running mate vice presidential candidate must be from Zanzibar and visa versa (Constitution 1977, Article 47(3)).
