Tanzania: 2000 Parliamentary election results

Updated June 2007

Voting on the Mainland and 34 constituencies in Zanzibar took place on 29 October 2000. However, in 16 Zanzibari constituencies on Unguja (in the Urban West Region) inefficient distribution of electoral materials forced the Electoral Commission hold fresh elections on 5 November 2000. The Civic United Front, with the support of some of the other opposition parties, demanded that the rerun include all 50 Zanzibari constituencies and boycotted the rerun when this demand was not met (National Electoral Commission 2001, 63, 66-67).

Seat allocation

There were 284 members of the National Assembly; for the constitutional arrangements underlying the seat distribution see Tanzania: Constitution. Seats in the National Assembly were allocated in the following way:

  • 181 members from the Mainland were elected from single member constituencies in first-past-the-post elections.
  • 50 members from Zanzibar were elected from single member constituencies in first-past-the-post elections.
  • 48 seats were allocated for the representation of women which were distributed amongst the parties in proportion to the seats they won in constituency elections.
  • Five members were elected by the House of Representatives of Zanzibar.
  • 10 members were nominated by the President.
  • The Attorney General was an ex officio a member.

Results

Note: The five members elected by the House of Representatives of Zanzibar, presidential nominees and the Attorney General are excluded.
