Sudan: 2010 National Assembly election results

Updated February 2011

The election was held 11-19 April 2010.

Election boycotts

In early April 2010 the National Umma Party joined the the Communist Party, the Umma breakaway Reform and Renewal and other smaller parties in boycotting all of the elections (Reuters 2010). The Sudan People's Liberation Movement for its part said that it would boycott elections in the North and only contest elections in Southern Sudan and two adjoining states (SFGate 2010). However, the names of their candidates remained on the ballot papers and several boycotting parties won seats nevertheless.

Women's representation

Of the 450 seats in the National Assembly 25%, or 112 seats, are reserved for women and are allocated by proportional representation on the basis of lists of women submitted by parties. Since women also won a further 2 seats, bringing their total to 114, women formed 25.56% of the 446 members reflected in the table below (IPU 2010; National Elections Commission 2010, 11-15).
