The 1999 elections
The relevant legal framework for the 1999 (and subsequent) elections were provided by:
- Constitutional provisions (the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act 108 of 1996), pertaining to the election of the National Assembly.
- Electoral Act, 73 of 1998.
- Electoral Commission Act, 51 of 1996.
- Public Funding of Represented Political Parties Act, 103 of 1997.
The 1994 elections
The three statutes relevant to South Africa's transition to democracy, which provided the statutory context of the 1994 elections, were:
- The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act 200 of 1993.
- The Electoral Act, 202 of 1993.
- The Independent Electoral Commission Act, 150 of 1993.
