Seychelles: 1998 National Assembly election results

Updated April 2007

Elections for the National Assembly were held in March 1998.

The National Assembly consisted of 25 members elected from single member (SM) constituencies by a plurality of votes and up to 10 additional members are allocated on a proportional representation basis, in this case 9, for each 10% of the vote a party achieved. A minimum of 8% of the vote is required for a party to be allocated a PR member (Constitution 1993, Article 78, Schedule 4).

By 1998 the United Opposition coalition members, Parti Seselwa (PS), Seychelles National Movement and the National Alliance Party, had merged to form a single party which took the name the Seychelles National Party (SNP) in July 1998 (Lodge et al 2002).
