Updated May 2010
The elections took place on 5 May 2010 and the voter turnout was 77%.
Up to eight seats can be allocated to "best losers" by the Electoral Supervisory Commission "[i]n order to ensure a fair and adequate representation of each community", in terms of Section 38 of the Constitution of 1968 (see Elklit, J 2005 Electoral system for Parliament in Mauritius for details). In 2010 seven best loser seats were allocated.
Coalitions
Alliance de l'avenir (Alliance of the Future) was a coalition of parties in government before the dissolution of Parliament on the 31 March 2010.
Alliance du coeur (Alliance of the Heart) was a coalition of parties on the opposition benches at that time. The two coalitions fielded 60 candidates each.
See Parties and coalitions that contested the 2010 National Assembly election for the details of the coalitions and parties.
