Mauritius: 2005 National Assembly elections results overview

The elections took place on July 3, 2005 and the voter turnout was 81.5% of 817 305 registered voters (Kasenally 2009, 288).
Up to eight seats can be allocated to "best losers" by the Electoral Supervisory Commission "[i]n order to ensure a fair and adequate representation of each community", in terms of Section 38 of the Constitution of 1968 (see Elklit, J 2005 Electoral system for Parliament in Mauritius for details). In 2005 all eight were allocated.
Coalitions
Alliance Sociale, led by Prime Minister Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, was a coalition of the Mauritius Labour Party (MLP/PTr), Mouvement Militant Socialiste Mauricienne (MMSM), Mouvement Socialiste Démocrate (MSD and Parti Mauricien Xavier Duval (PMXD).
Alliance MSM/MMM, led by the Leader of the Opposition Paul Bérenger was a coalition of the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM), Mouvement Socialiste Mauricien (MSM) and Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate (PMSD).
Results overview
Note on "others" The two elective seats went to the Organisation du Peuple de Rodrigues (OPR), while the two "best loser" seats were allocated to the Mouvement Rodriguais (MR).
