Mauritius: 2000 National Assembly elections results

The election took place on 11 September 2000. There were 780 031 voters registered and the turnout was 80.9% (Kasenally 2009, 288).

Up to eight seats, in addition to those contested in the multimember constituency contests, are allocated to "best losers" by the Electoral Supervisory Commission "[i]n order to ensure a fair and adequate representation of each community", in terms of Section 38 of the Constitution of 1968.

Electoral alliances

MSM/MMM was mainly an alliance of Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM), Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM) (Kadima 2000).
MLP/PMXD was an alliance of the Mauritius Labour Party (LP or PTr) and Parti Mauricien Xavier Duval (PMXD) (Kadima 2000).

Results overview

Note on "others" The two elective seats went to the Organisation du Peuple de Rodrigues (OPR), while the two "best loser" seats were allocated to the Mouvement Rodriguais (MR).
