Mauritius: 1991 National Assembly election results

The election took place on 15 September 1991.
Up to eight seats, in addition to those contested in the multimember constituency contests, are allocated to "best losers" by the Electoral Supervisory Commission "[i]n order to ensure a fair and adequate representation of each community", in terms of Section 38 of the Constitution of 1968. In 1991 only four best loser seats were allocated.
According to Lodge et al (2002, 171) voting statistics were:
Registered voters: 628 000
Votes cast: 573 300
Turnout: 84.5%
Electoral Aliances and parties
MSM/MMM/RTD was an alliance of the Mouvement Socialiste Mauricien (MSM), the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) and the Rassemblement des Travaillistes Mauricien (RTM).
MLP/PGD/PPR was an alliance of the Labour Party (LP or PTr), Parti Gaëtan Duval (PGD; formerly Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate) and Organisation du Peuple de Rodrigues (OPR).
