Mauritius: 1987 National Assembly election results

The election took place on 30 August 1987.
Up to eight seats, in addition to those contested in the multimember constituency contests, are allocated to "best losers" by the Electoral Supervisory Commission "[i]n order to ensure a fair and adequate representation of each community", in terms of Section 38 of the Constitution of 1968. In 1987 all eight best loser seats were allocated.
According to Lodge et al (2002, 169) voting statistics were:
Registered voters: 639 488
Votes cast: 546 623
Turnout: 85.5%
Electoral alliances
Alliance was a coalition of the Mouvement Socialiste Mauricien (MSM), Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate and both Labour Party factions (LP or PTr).
Union was a coalition of the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM), Mouvement Travailliste Démocrat (MTD) and Front des Travailleurs Socialiste (FTS).
