1966-1994 One-party state
In 1966 Malawi became a one-party state under the Malawi Congress Party and its leader Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda was proclaimed president-for-life in 1971. Single party legislative elections with multiple candidates, all vetted by President Banda, were held in 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983 and 1987 (LODGE, T, KADIMA, D & POTTIE, D (eds) 2002 Compendium of Elections in Southern Africa, EISA, 124).
