Madagascar: 2001 Presidential results
Updated May 2008
The election was held on 16 December 2001 (EISA 2007, 3). The results announced on 18 December gave Marc Ravalomanana 46% of the vote to Didier Ratsiraka's 41%, which would have required a run-off between the leading two candidates since no one had obtained an absolute majority; Marc Ravalomanana rejected the results and eventually a recount was held that gave him an absolute majority in the first round (see Zafy and Ratsiraka governments (1992-2002) (continued) for a fuller account of the crisis).
