The May 1998 legislative elections gave control of the National Assembly to the ruling Arema of Didier Ratsiraka. Ratsiraka's party won 63 of the 150 seats in competition and emerged as the leading force in a coalition government. Several organisations, particularly the Council of Christian Churches, alleged that the elections were marred by fraud and abuses.
