The 1995 Constitutional Referendum allowed the president of the republic rather than the National Assembly to appoint and dismiss the prime minister. Overall, 5,894,982 voters were registered: there were 3,854,792 total votes, and 3,365,664 in total valid votes cast (there were 489,128 invalid blank votes or invalid votes). A voter turnout of 65.4 per cent was recorded. The referendum result is presented in Table 6.
