Madagascar: 1977 National People's Assembly election results

Updated June 2010

The election was held on 30 June 1977.

From 1975 until 1990 no parties or political groups were permitted to partake in public life and in elections except those affiliated to the National Front for the Defense of the Revolution (FNDR, Front National pour la Defense de la Révolution—FNDR) which was dominated by the ruling Vanguard for the Malagasy Revolution (AREMA, Avant Garde de la Révolution Malgache).

Background to the election

According to the Interparliamentary Union (1977, 107):

  • The National Movement for the Independence of Madagascar (MONIMA  Mouvement National pour l'Indépendance de Madagascar) left the FNDR before the elections and did not take part.
  • The FNDR fielded a slingle slate of candidates for the 137 seats from the four member parties.

The election was thus uncontested and the voters were only required to accept or reject the candidates presented.

Election results

About 90% of the 8 471 814 registered voters cast their ballots of whom 92% ratified the NFDC's candidate list (Interparliamentary Union 1977, 107; Thibaut 1999, 538).
