Updated March 2000
The number of women serving in the National Assembly doubled from 4 to 8 of 47 members in the 1999 elections. The number of women serving in the cabinet also increased from 3 to 4 of 17 members. Of the 13 High Court judges just one was a woman.
In Botswana women constitute 54% of the 25-39 years old population. However, only one woman held a cabinet post prior to 1997 and only four out of forty were elected in Parliament in the 1994 elections.
