Angola: Parties and coalitions registered for 2008 National Assembly election

Updated July 2008

Registration and the 2008 election

Formal registration of parties for participation in elections is undertaken by the Constitutional Court ("Tribunal Constitucional" in terms of criteria laid down in Article 5 of Law 2/2005 of 1 July 2005, informally referred to as "the Law of Political Parties" (see Party registration for more information). Several parties and coalitions were refused registration because they failed to meet the legal requirements (see Tribunal Constitucional 2008 in "References" for a list of applicants).

The National Electoral Commission (Comissão Nacional Eleitoral, CNE) maintains a list of all political, whether registered for elections or not. In 2007 the CNE listed 138 parties (see CNE 2008 in "References"), only a some of which applied to the Constitutional Court for registration for the 2008 election, while others registered as part of a coalition.

Campaign code of conduct

Campaigning by political parties is governed by a code of conduct that is legally binding. See Code of conduct for more information.
