Democracy at the Local Level
Southern and eastern Africa
EISA was invited to participate in a capacity building programme with a view to designing a curriculum for local authorities in southern and eastern Africa. This was done in collaboration with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the African Union of Local Authorities (AULA). The design of the material follows a local democracy assessment carried out in four cities: Gaborone, Lusaka, Mwanza and Nairobi.
The curriculum is designed to provide in depth training material for those directly involved in promoting democracy at local level. It consists of two modules:
- Conducting local democracy assessment for enhancing development
- Community participation from design to evaluation
The training curriculum draws on the teaching methodology and content format of the Bridge (Building Resource in Democracy, Governance and Elections).
