Curriculum review
The EISA Democracy, Human Rights and Peace Education in Schools project has recently undertaken an extensive review in six SADC countries to ascertain the policies and practices which have been put in place to support the implementation of human rights at school level. As part of a commitment to the furtherance of human rights and democracy in the region, as a first step, EISA undertook the study in Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South African and Zambia during 2005. Ministries of Education and civil society organisations in these countries were consulted in order to ascertain the policies and practices which have been put in place to support the implementation of human rights at school level. A task team comprising representatives from each of these countries met in Johannesburg in 2005 to agree on the framework for the study and to assign specific tasks. The Review of the study will be followed by the development of a generic resource pack for educators which can be adapted to suit specific country contexts. The report is available from EISA from ZAR 100.
